Ionization smoke alarms are more responsive to flaming fires, using a small amount of radioactive material to create an electrically charged circuit that triggers the alarm when disrupted by smoke. On the other hand, photoelectric smoke alarms detect fires that start with smoldering, utilizing a light source aimed away from the sensor that triggers the alarm when smoke reflects light onto the sensor. For optimal protection, experts recommend using both types of alarms—ionization and photoelectric.
